I’m Pip Schofield.

A long career in nursing and midwifery provided a somewhat unconventional path to the world of proofreading. Fortunately, attention to detail is an essential skill for a midwife. Eighteen years of NHS experience (including management of an antenatal clinic) gave me sharp skills in observation, detection and communication: solid foundations for a conscientious proofreader. After a cherished break to bring-up my children, I decided to transfer my clinical skills from high-risk pregnancy to text.

Working closely with pregnancy is always a privilege and mostly a joy – but occasionally it is traumatic. Finding the right words to share a devastating diagnosis and delivering them in the right tone of voice makes a world of difference. As Rudyard Kipling famously told the Royal College of Surgeons: “Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.”

When words are written with accuracy and clarity they have the power to instil trust, build reputation and reflect quality – saving businesses valuable time and money.

I enjoy working with all authors and their subject fields. My background lends expertise in nursing, midwifery, pharmaceutical and medical texts and I have a particular interest in supporting writers with dyslexia.

I’m an entry-level member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP). I follow their code of practice and value their standards.
